The Most Shocking Email I Ever Received. How I Grow From It

Now for respect reasons for you, the reader, I will not be copying the email here for everyone to see. It is not pretty so I will try to make the point as clear as I can.

Last year I was starting to have many problems with my daughter, who was then 16. She was rebelling and not following pretty serious rules and this carried on all spring and into the winter so I had to follow what I thought best as a parent, as we all do. Now, I was also planning for my own wedding that I was putting on myself in my backyard in October. My daughter was to be my maid of honor which meant she should help, right?

That was fine at the time. I just wanted for us to be okay and her to follow my rules and we were really trying hard to work it out with compromise. Each new thing worked for a small time period and then, boom, back at square one. So stressful at the time. I was losing weight but not in the healthy way.

I was always asking for and receiving advice all the time and some did help. One huge role in my daughter's life is my mother who has been a big influence since she was born, since I was only 18 when I had her.

The wedding came and went. It was absolutely perfect. Then shortly after my daughter was continuing on breaking the rules as usual. No honeymoon as you can imagine. In November my daughter had been living other places but also breaking rules and doing just what she wanted when she wanted so we had to keep taking it to the next level.

I ended up kicking her out in December. She had a full time social worker who had been absolutely wonderful for both of us throughout this. She then started her adventures of teen shelters. She bounced through 3 total because, yes, she didn't follow rules.

My mother, apparently had some feelings she was not sharing with me at the time and let them build up until December 23rd after midnight, probably after a few cocktails. I, of course got the email on Christmas Eve when I had to spend the day alone. Not pretty for most of the day.

It basically stated my whole name, my maiden name, and yelling at me how disappointed she was in me and slamming me for every mistake I ever made as a young mother and what a horrible person I was and she did not care to speak to me again. That sums it up. I was mortified.

I responded to the tune of, I hope you find yourself someday and isn't it funny how the school and social workers all support me. My husband responded in a very different manner, which also cannot be repeated.

I still have not heard an apology or have I talked to her since. I think maybe someday she will sincerely apologize but knowing her, I just don't know.

The moral to the story is that is changed my life by opening my eyes to the fact that you are only as good as the people you surround yourself with and that does include your family. I went on to educate myself through an online marketing community that is just full of the most amazingly supportive people I have ever known. The world really is a big place and in the past year I have learned to stop letting others drag me down with them.

I will leave it at that for now because I will being writing more on all the moments and relationships that have changed my life in the last year.

We tell ourselves and also others to have patience, especially in crisis but somehow when it comes to the crunch, impatience takes over, panic sets in and the end result is certainly not what we would have ideally liked.

Most people learn the value of patience the hard way, as they go through hardships and experience the adverse outcomes of impatience and haste.

For a few though, patience is part of their temperament and nature. They are calm and collected even in the most challenging situations.

When it especially comes to relationships, patience pays rich dividends. Relationships can be strong and supportive and they can be delicate and fragile as well. Losing your temper, hurting the other person's feelings, saying spiteful words in a fit of rage (even though you didn't mean it) … these are all terribly damaging to any relationship. Regretting your words later may be too late to repair the damage.

I am listing here a few relationship tips that will help you avoid distress and agony in your love and marriage relationships, or for that matter, all kinds of relationships. These are universal values that create the foundation of all strong and successful relationships and my advice would be for you to remember them, especially in stressful situations:

1.‘Ten thoughts before one word' – Think before you speak rather than doing it the other way around. Most often, we blurt out words we didn't mean and then start thinking about how they might hurt the other person. Rather than thinking after speaking, think ten times before uttering the words. Remember, words are like arrows – once they shoot out of your quiver, you cannot make them return.

Therefore, choose your words with care. Especially when you find yourself in the middle of an argument or a miscommunication in a love relationship or at the receiving end of a friend or colleague's complaints or grievances. Do not fly off the handle. If you also start yelling and fuming, you will find yourself slipping further away from a resolution to the conflict. Take a deep breath, listen to the other person quietly, while thinking hard on what will help resolve the stressful situation. Avoid reacting with anger or animosity. You will find that the other person will appreciate your patience and listen to your words later with more composure and respect. You will not only be able to help the other person see reason, you will also make the foundation of your love or marriage relationship with that person stronger.

2.Control on your temper – Life is not always perfect. Hence, there is no guarantee that everything will always work according to your wishes. There are so many things that take place throughout the day over which you don't have any control.

Traffic snarls that delay you, files that go missing, a virus attack on your computer or database messing up all your hard work, children crying and causing havoc at home, coming back late from work and finding the house in a mess, dinner getting burnt and so on. Murphy's Law says, "If anything can go wrong, it will."

Try to take situations that don't match up to your liking in stride as essential parts of life. Problems help you appreciate value of good things. Face the problems with calmness and fortitude. If you keep your patience, you will find the solution. If you fret and fume with impatience, the problem will remain as it is or become worse. Panic and anger only complicate things further whereas patience and good sense help you get to the desired result.

3.Be calm when reacting to the other's mistakes – In any relationship, there may be times when the other person makes a mistake which may cost you dearly. If you go hammer and tongs at the other person, be it a friend or colleague or your spouse or even the special person in your life – you will only end up making that person feel insulted, guilty, nervous and panicked. Place yourself in the other's shoes and you will realize how painful this experience can be. Such needless bickering can spell doom for a love or marriage relationship. A handful of patience is worth more than a bushel of brains to preserve and protect your bonding.

If you deal with such situations with maturity and patience, you will help the other person realize the gravity of the mistake and also give him/her the confidence to rectify it. Above all, you will earn respect for your calm and wise behavior.

And, while it's hard to deal with people in most cases when they faulter, forgiving opens not only doors of opportunity on all fronts, but, it allows a spiritual foundation to be built in solid stone. So, with that in mind, it is very possible to [build meaningful lifetime relationships], and still have positive relations with a person, or, within a group for a lifetime. It's all in how you see things and take the approach in personal or business relationships building, because it's all about the choices we make. Uncle Wes and His Flying Truck

Uncle Wes was this wonderful father figure. Although I had a very good father, Uncle Wes often stepped in and added a special dimension to my childhood and the memories I now have, in additon to what I gained from my own parents, adults in the neighborhood, and friends of the family.

It was over sixty years ago, in the 1940s, when Uncle Wes had this special black truck. The amazing thing about his truck was that it could fly.

Uncle Wes would call up our home on some Friday nights and invite me to go with him to cemeteries in his flying truck...the next day.

A parent might be scared of knowing that a child would be riding in a flying truck and certainly not to go to cemeteries. Why in the world would they be flying and spending time in cemeteries?

Uncle Wes was my mother's brother and all the family was very special. We all knew Uncle Wes to be a great man.

I would never hear the special black truck coming, because it was a quiet truck. That's probably because Uncle Wes kept his special black, flying truck, in tip-top condition and it was pretty new, too. I always would be sitting on the top step of our steep stairs leading up to the big porch at our house on Willets Place in Ithaca. He would ride up the hill on East Buffalo Street and turn on Willets Place, a private street where the Ithaca College Infirmary was also located, and the President of Ithaca College's home was in front of us.

I'd run down the stairs and jump in the truck when I'd see Uncle Wes turn the corner and head down the street. I'd always be looking forward to my times with Uncle Wes.

Off we would go and once we were on the road Uncle Wes would announce that we were now lifting off and starting to fly. I believed him.

Was I not bright? How come I fell for ths?

I guess because I didn't stand up on the seat and I was just a little child, I believed with all my heart that we were flying and heading for the cemetery.

Why would we be going to a cemetery?

Uncle Wes owned a monument shop where he sold granite and marble monuments and flat, rectangular slabs of stone, giving honor to those who had died.

He was skilled in chiseling in the names and dates of the person who had died and always put the birth and death dates.

My job was to help him clean up afterwards. We would take rags and clean the monuments and flat stones with turpentine or mineral spirits and then we would take grass clippers and trim all around the granite parts or marble areas and get everything looking great.

Sometimes we headed for other parts of a cemetery to do more work...or we would head out, flying, to another cemetery in Ithaca or outside the city. Mostly, we would spend the whole day together.

At some point we would stop work and eat our bag lunch. We would always have a sandwich, maybe an apple or banana, water to drink, and either Aunt Mary's delicious chocolate cake or something my mom would send with us.

Uncle Wes and Aunt Mary had three children and at least one was now an adult. But, one of the children was a boy just about my age, just a little younger, and we were like brothers.

I guess he went out with his dad at other times, and maybe his sister and older brother had done the same thing, too, but these Saturday trips in the flying truck were just our times together.

What a geat man and what an example he set for me.

We might have been only spending time in cemeteries and flying in that special black truck, but I think that's where I learned great respect and honor for the people who had died, and where I learned that we should always spend time helping little chlldren to develop well.

I cherish what Uncle Wes did for me and he will always be in my heart.
