Ways to Make a Great First Impression

We are all looking for genuine ways to connect with others, build lasting relationships and expand our networking circle. So when is a good time to network, promote or brand yourself? How about whenever you are out in the world, standing in line at the grocery store, or in an environment where a lot of people are.

You are always networking and building relationships so focus on getting to know people that can be of value to you and that you can be of value to them. So how do you go about making a great first impression?

Most people go to networking events with the intention of telling someone about their service or product, or giving them their elevator pitch and hope that someone says; "I need that or I know someone that needs that." You are entering a new environment from a stand point that is one sided or greedy. You are approaching the situation from a self serving position and you are only thinking about what you can get from them.

First you need to develop visibility, credibility, and profitability. If you were to turn the self serving approach around and say, "how can I be of service or help you," the outcome would be very different and extremely beneficial to all parties involved.

You are going to have to go out in the world and be of benefit to others, this creates visibility. The need to be able to talk about what you do is very important, but not right from the beginning. You need to build credibility with the other person or networking group. They need to know that if you offer them something, you can deliver. "Success comes from making promises and keeping them." Jack Canfield That builds trust, it builds relationships, which builds long term connectivity and profitability.

So once you've established a connection and get to know someone at an event or networking function, ask the question, "what do you need right now, what are the 2 most important projects you are working on right now?" What's the greatest challenge you are facing right now? Whatever it might be, find out what they need and then follow through.

Then the next question to ask is, "what can I do to help you get to where you want to go?" Here's an example. During a coaching session, I asked my client what they needed and how could I help them? My client was specific about what they needed as far as being more organized and having a step by step plan of accomplishing goals. I used techniques to provide them with organization and steps to stay on task. They received what they needed by way of organization and goal setting skills and I helped them get from where they are to were they wanted to be. You want to deliver what you've promised to deliver. Look at networking as the beginning of a relationship.

Also, you want to be able to tell them what you need. Be very clear about what it is you need. If you need help personally, like a job referral because your son needs work, or your need a consult because your mother has breast cancer. Or you may need financial assistance, like a financial advisor, there maybe a certain market you want to penetrate, a key initiative or important connection you want to start or meet. Whatever it is, be specific. You want to have maybe 2 very important and pressing matters addressed because you don't want to spread yourself thin and be all over the place.

Once you've established yourself with visibility and credibility, the profits will follow. You better believe that when you ask them for help, they are going to return the favor. Now that you've delivered on their concerns, this puts you in direct line to receive what you want. This is part of building a network of like minded professional individuals that will promote you and your products because of the trust, honor and friendship you've created.

The last thing you want to do is follow up. Many of us go to networking functions and collect a hand full of business cards and end up throwing them in a box, on your desk or putting a rubber band around them. Follow up with the potential connections, prospects, or clients. Make sure there is something you can do for them. Like provide them with a new product, send them one of your articles, or a news clipping you found out they were interested in, or send them a birthday card. You want to keep you on top of their mind.

Focus on creating a long term relationship. Your goal is to build a relationship. Ask the question as to how you can be of service to them. "If you help enough people get what they want, you will always have what you want." Zig Ziglar. Figure out how you can provide a solution to their problem and follow up. And remember to be clear about the challenge you want resolved about your life or current situation. This makes it a fair and even exchange were everybody gets what they want.

When I first moved here I had no problem making Friend Washington DC. This city has so much to offer and so many wonderful sights to see, that if you're outgoing like I am you will have tons of friends in no time.

When I moved into my apartment building in the city, I made my first friend my first day there while walking my dog. It's so easy to find friends if you have an adorable animal attached to your arm. It was winter and there was snow on this grassy area in front of a church. My dog loves running in the snow so I let her loose to prance around and so did this woman who ironically has the same breed of dog as me and happened to live on the exact same floor.

It was an instant bond. I knew within five minutes that I had a Friend Washington DC. We struck up a long conversation in front of that church and then went back to the same floor and made plans to meet for coffee across the street the next morning. We also both took care of each other's dogs when one of us was out town, and also helped out with the walks when one of us had to work late.

I also found some friends online. I'm a big backgammon fan and there's this website where you can play with people in the same city on your computer. I met this one man named Rick who was at the same level as I was. I'm an excellent backgammon player and it's so disappointing to play people that aren't as good as you are. Eventually, after months of playing online he asked if I'd like to meet at a backgammon club in DC.

So Rick and I finally met and played in person. He wasn't anyone I was interested in dating. Besides, he was 30 years older then I, and was married. He just turned out to be a great Friend Washington DC. He also loves baseball. But we don't like the same teams so we would spar with each other about how our teams are doing. I also met his wife who is a wonderful woman and always bakes me brownies. I'm so glad I moved here.

How you cope with peer pressure as a teenager/youth could either make or destroy you totally. Friends, colleagues and peers are there to add, remove, build, destroy, cage or liberate that hidden quality you have inside. So it is very important to know how to exist and grow even under their constant pressure as a teenager or a youth.

1. Make friends with those that soothe your life style, do not make friends out of obligation, pressure, attention, sympathy or in fulfillment of a societal views and acceptance. People must earn your friendship.

A friendship or company must respect you for who you are, it must listen to you, it must never put pressure on you in any way and it must not question your belief, your views and heritage. All of these must be considered before taking a person or group of people as friends. Always remember that friends and colleagues will always put pressure on you in all areas of your life, but the question is, is it a positive pressure or a negative one. Only you have the answers.

2. Know yourself, knowing yourself very well makes you locate and connect with your kind. Are you an introvert or an extrovert, a fun loving or a quiet person and so on? The more you are to identify your innermost personality, the better, because you are able to find the right people to move with, which helps reduce the pressure of trying to be among.

3. Build yourself an impervious mind. This kind of mind helps you sieve and remove words that are toxic to your personality. You hear them but you never act on them, especially the negative words. With this kind of mind, you are not quick to act, rather you take time to think over all that comes your way.

Like your friends might pressure you to start drinking and smoking, but if you don't allow the pressure to get through and break down your defense, then you never do what they say.

When you believe in yourself, everyone around you will start believing in you, no matter what. Just don't let the world get to you easily, be yourself and do not ever try to be like anyone else. That person might be able to cope with such personality but may not be able to.

Knowing and applying all these principles gives you an edge over all pressure that might come your way.

She Just Wants To Be Friends - How to Still Get Her Back

This means that in time, you become so hopeless enmeshed in being a friend that your ex never even considers dating you again. Friendship is the worst way to get back an ex girlfriend.

As if that weren't bad enough, establishing a friendship with your ex girlfriend will lead to an avalanche of jealousy - on both sides. First, how do you think you'll handle it when your ex starts dating someone else? Will you be angry and bitter? Will you trash this guy in front of her? Or will you act like a happy friend, clap your hands, and wish her the best? Neither one of those reactions is too appealing, nor is watching the girl you love sitting on another guy's lap.
And when he finds out you're not just her friend but also someone she slept with? This guy's going to whisk her away so fast you'll think she's in the witness protection program. You'll never see this girl again, not as long as she's dating her new boyfriend. The friendship you made after breaking up seemed so strong and unbreakable... until she found someone else that she liked better.

Now let's turn the situation around: you meet and date another girl. Do you still stay friends with your exgirlfriend? And if so, do you tell your new love interest that this was once a girl you dated, hung out with, and know so intimately? Chances are she's not going to be too happy about you continuing such a friendship. Which means you'll either do it in secret (which won't exactly feel too legit) or you'll shatter ties with your ex, causing her to be angry at how little you valued being friends with her. Either way, someone's getting hurt.

But okay, enough bad news. Let's look at the good side of things when it comes to your girlfriend wanting to remain friends.

First off, the fact that she still wants you around is a great sign that your ex isn't fully over the relationship. Most girls who are no longer interested in the guy they break up with will make a clean break: in just a few short days there's no more seeing, talking to, emailing, texting you, or any of that stuff. But if your ex asks to stay friendly? She basically wants to keep you "around", just in case she ends up changing her mind about things. It's comfortable to know you're still there for her, and that if she gets lonely enough you're only a phone call away. If your exgirlfriend wants friendship, she also wants a connection - and this can be instrumental in getting your ex back.

So how do you win back an ex girlfriend who just wants to be friends?

The answer to that question is simple in theory, but hard in practice. You need to say no.

When your ex suggests remaining friends, slowly shake your head and wave goodbye. Tell her you don't think it's such a good idea, and then walk away. Your girlfriend dumped you, but she also wanted to keep you on some levels. By refusing that role of half-boyfriend, you're forcing your ex to make a choice: all of you, or none of you. If she wants to move on then she's going to have to do it alone, because you're not going to be there for her. This will make the break up ten times more scary for your ex than if you were still holding her hand through email, phone calls, and the like.

"Let's just be friends" is a demotion, not an honor. Stand up and refuse to accept anything less than the long term relationship you really want with this girl. Don't accept bits and pieces, or table scraps from what could still be a great romance with your ex. If you want your ex back, you need to make the right moves and say the right things - there are paths that lead right back into her heart. Friendship however, is a roadblock along those paths. Push it to the side and continue on.

Iker Casillas Real Madrid
