In 2005, Vickie Guerrero began to make cameo appearances during the feud between her husband Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio, which had escalated when Eddie promised to reveal a secret concerning Mysterio's son, Dominick. Vickie was on the July 14 episode of SmackDown! with two of Eddie's three daughters to stop Eddie from revealing Mysterio's secret. Eddie promised not to reveal the secret should he lose to Mysterio at The Great American Bash, though that turned out to be another one of his character's trademark lies, as Eddie revealed that Dominick was really his biological son. Vickie later reappeared at SummerSlam to convince Eddie to put a stop to his war with Mysterio and not to go through with the "Custody of Dominick" ladder match that night. When that failed, she cost him the match by pushing over the ladder he was on as he was about to win.On November 13, 2005, Eddie Guerrero died of heart failure in his Minneapolis hotel room and was found by his nephew Chavo.On-screen, this led to Rey Mysterio, Eddie's real-life  friend, getting more screen time and higher profile matches, including defeating Kurt Angle and Randy Orton at WrestleMania 22 for the World Heavyweight Championship.

In 2006, approximately seven or eight months after Eddie's death, Vickie started appearing more prominently in more controversial storylines. She first asserted herself during a feud between Mysterio and Chavo Guerrero when Chavo accused Mysterio of being "nothing but a leech living off the blood of the Guerrero name" on the August 4 episode of SmackDown!. Subsequently, she acted as peacemaker between the two former friends until she seemingly inadvertently interfered in their match at SummerSlam in 2006, costing Mysterio the match. She then officially betrayed him by siding with Chavo and hitting Mysterio in the back with a steel chair on the following episode of SmackDown!, becoming a heel in the process. On the September 1 edition of SmackDown!, she declared herself Chavo's business manager and Mysterio an "insignificant chapter" in her past.At No Mercy, Chavo lost to Mysterio in a Falls Count Anywhere match. On October 20, Rey Mysterio lost an "I Quit" match against Chavo after interference from Vickie.

A Woman With No Hometown

We moved so often when I was growing up in a U.S. Air Force family that packing our all our belongings and leaving town seemed a routine occurrence. Some of my earliest memories involve long car trips. Once, there was a long boat trip across the Atlantic to Germany.

My two younger sisters and I would sing songs we had learned in school for long periods, until dad would finally tell us to stop. We played the usual road games, and colored when we were younger. Reading wasn't a good idea, as it would usually lead to car sickness!

There were no fast food restaurants in the 1940's, so we had lots of roadside picnics after shopping for fixings in local stores. There weren't Interstate highways either, so we drove through the main streets of towns along our route, sometimes stopping at local diners or restaurants for meals.

Upon arrival at our destination, we had to start all over again making new friends, and learning to get around our new schools and neighborhoods. We learned to rely on each other! The older we got the more difficult it seemed to break off tender buds of friendship, and to leave behind all that had become familiar.

We used to love the stories our mother told us about her own growing-up years in a small rural north Florida town, where she had lived since she was small. Everyone in town knew all there was to know about their neighbors! It was as foreign to us as another planet. We enjoyed visiting our mother's hometown, but it could not be the place for us that it had been for her.

In 1958, I graduated from Melbourne High School on Florida's east coast. I attended this school  from my junior year until my graduation. I met and married a young man from that area, and we had children and were together for many years. Still, I do not feel a deep attachment to my classmates, although I did form some friendships while I was there, and attended one reunion (the 30th).

My husband was in the U.S. Air Force when we married, having joined right after he graduated from high school, and we continued to move frequently. Even after he left the service, we continued to relocate frequently due to changes in our circumstances.

We eventually moved to Tampa, along with our three eldest children, in the early '60s. The house in which I now live alone is one we bought together in 1964.  So I am now "settled" in my older years.

My early life experiences have taught me some good lessons, and some not so good.

The not-so-good lessons have been a rather detached disposition, since in my experience nothing is permanent, and a sense of there being something lacking when I hear others talking about friends they've had since childhood.

As for the good, I have lived in a number of different places, and perhaps I have acquired an education of sorts in having done so!

Finding Friend Washington DC is So Easy if you Make the Effort

Are you shy and find it hard to make Friend Washington DC? I'm shy and spent my first eight months living in DC, going to work, leaving work and picking up dinner from various delis, and going home to walk my precious dog and watch TV until I fell asleep. It was very lonely and I desperately wanted to make friends with some women.

At the time I wasn't interested in meeting men because I was in a long distance relationship with my boyfriend in New York. We spoke on the phone several times a day, and sent texts to each other, but it wasn't the same as living with him. He was waiting to see if he could transfer his job to DC and he visited on weekends regularly. But I still had no way to find friends. At least I though I didn't. Basically, I just wasn't putting in the effort.

I figured out that the way to make Friend Washington DC was to sign up for classes at community colleges, attend seminars on things that interested me, and I also signed up for a ballet class.  I loved ballet when I was younger and thought it might be fun. After doing these things I made friends.

I don't think it's important to have 20 friends. I just like having two or three close girlfriends that I can trust. That can be hard to come by and it takes a while to make friends that way, but over time it happened. After this one seminar on African Art one woman suggested we all go around the corner to this coffee place and discuss the seminar. There was one woman there that I clicked with and we exchanged numbers. The next day she called and asked if I wanted to join her book club because one of the members left the group and they wanted to fill the space. I was thrilled to join because I love books.

Making Friend Washington DC was so easy from then on. If you are willing to partake in different events, which there are plenty of in DC, you'll slowly but surely have close women friends in your life. I still miss my friends back in New York, but I now love my new friends here. And the best news of all is my boyfriend got the transfer he wanted from work. He better put a ring on it soon!

Family Smackdown: Using the Social Aspect to Create Lasting Change

I just read a great book called Change Anything by 5 different people.  It's an empirical study of how people create change.  What are the factors involved?  They narrowed it down to three:

1.  Personal

2.  Environmental

3.  Social

Each one has a  motivational component and an ability component.  You have to be motivated to change, then attain the ability to do so.  You have to take personal responsibility. Jesus asked one person, "Do you want to be healed?"  Then you have to create the environment for change.  Don't buy a bunch of snacks at the grocery store and think that you can use your will power to not eat them.  The last part, and I think likely the most important part, is the social aspect of change.  Let people in your life know what you are trying to do.  Build in the accountability, connection, and encouragement.  We have found that we get much better results with groups than we do with individuals.

We work not only with emotional intelligence, but mental and physical peak performance.  It all works together to create amazing, lasting changes personally and professionally.  One recent group of 21 top leaders lost over 200 pounds as a group and significantly increased their emotional competence, especially their interpersonal skills.

A couple of the guys decided to bring their family in on the fun.  As a family, they decided on some goals and put them into a spread sheet. One of the guys called it The Family Smackdown.  It was a competition.  The family members who did the most activities over an eight week period won cash prizes.

The items were:

Sleep (7 hours)

Water (8 glasses)

No sugar

No junk food

Fruits and vegetables (2 servings each)

Journal

Scriptures (15 minutes) and two prayers

No eating after 9 pm

Act of kindness

It energized the family and helped the participant and his family members to make those positive changes.  And these initiatives tend to linger long after the end of the program.

There is a friend of mine on Facebook who I have known for 30 years.  One day, she put on Facebook that she was going to start walking.  She wrote every single day after she finished her morning walk and created quite a following.  Some days, there were more than 50 comments, encouraging her and reinforcing that behavior.  And she kept walking.  At the one year mark, there were over dozens of people who commented on her status, encouraging her and congratulating her.  One person gave her a very expensive pair of walking shoes as a gift for making the one year mark.  She is up to 459 days and she has now lost  60 pounds and her outlook has totally changed.  Would she have attained these results without that social aspect?  Perhaps.  But it is a powerful testament to adding the social into any change endeavor that you have.  She has inspired many others to walk.  And another friend who has encouraged her has put on Facebook that he is going to quit smoking.

Change is hard.  Period.  And we need all the help and encouragement we can get.  So accept the personal responsibility, create that environment for change, and get as many people in on the process as possible!
